Does it make you cringe to see a piece of trash tumbling down the street or floating in a creek? Do you wish there was something you could do about it? One way you can help reduce waste in your community is by participating in a local cleanup event. If you know a group of people that would be motivated to reduce waste in your community, you could consider organizing your own cleanup. You can even do your own mini-cleanup by bringing a bag and picking up trash while on a walk or set a goal to pick up three (or more) pieces of trash from the street while you’re out of the house. Any action you take to reduce waste will make a difference in your community and the greater environment.
A few upcoming or ongoing community cleanup opportunities include:
Friends of the Creeks Annual Creek Cleanup

Information can be found here.
The City of Antioch Neighborhood Cleanup

Cleanup location information is updated on the City of Antioch’s Calendar.
El Cerrito Green Teams- Creek and Greenway cleanups

If you would like to organize your own cleanup event, the Ocean Conservancy’s DIY Cleanup Tool Kit is a great resource. It covers what to do before, during, and after the cleanup.
Easy Tip to Reduce Waste: Buy items with fewer packaging materials. Many items bought from the store come with two or three layers of packaging. For example, cookies may come in a plastic tray, covered with a sheet of paper, surrounded by a sealed plastic container. Look for the cookies with just one layer of packaging. Making the effort to seek items with fewer packaging materials will help reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills (or in waterways, streets, etc.).
