It's a Question of Lifestyle

Question: Why is it that we (and often the media) generally think of Trader Joe's as somewhat just south of Whole Foods in terms of being a "cool place to shop"? What's it take to get TJ's to stop packaging their product in plastic armor? I don't buy their produce. What if no one did? I bet things would change.

  • It is a mystery because the employees and the "image" they want to portray is really GREEN...whats up with that? Maybe we should ask. I know the assistant manager of the Oak Grove store was at GreenFEST last year and she's a doll. She brought lots of goodies. Perhaps we can have some influence at least locally. I can dream. I enjoy the farmer's markets for produce these days anyway and you can snack and have dinner while you are there. Fun, fun, fun, went to Lafayette tonight and had Nature's Bounty. It was really delicious and healthy!!
  • I hear ya on the TJ's/WF thing Mark! Seems like it comes down to the pocketbook. I definitely prefer fresh, organic, minimum or no packaging but it seems to come at a price. $30 today I spent at Whole Foods for a modest/moderate amount of fruit and a small tub of yogurt. I think you pay for what you get, but it should cost more to get packaged produce! What a waste.
  • Question: Take a look at the photo of all of the disposable food boxes are piled up in the new Time magazine article on Haiti. Why isn't throw-away packaging edible by goats? Composting takes too much time and effort. Redevelop disposable boxes to have a nutritional value to goats while still being suitable for packaging (hey, we landed on the moon, right?). Bring in a herd of goats - garbage disappears. People benefit from the goats in many ways. Wouldn't this be a good channel for investing stimulus funds? I'm sure some grad student at UC Berkeley could figure out something. It'd be worth a try. Yes?
  • Question: Granted, landscape lighting does look cool at night, but do we really need the bright spotlights in the front of the new County Public Defender's building in Martinez? They may have a security value but CFLs are relatively cheap. Security issues notwithstanding, it seems to me that I could learn to appreciate a more subtle lighting effect. What do you think?
