Sustainable Solano, in partnership with Republic Services, presents an educational series for Benicia “Healthy Soil, Healthy Planet”.

Are you looking for a more sustainable way to landscape your yard? Do you want to grow more nutritious and delicious food? Would you like to compost at home, but are concerned about space constraints, rodents and foul smells?

Join us for a conversation with Kathleen Huffman, a permaculture designer and a local sustainable landscaper, who will help connect the dots between soil health, plant health, and human health.

This presentation will cover all aspects of composting in residential environments. We will discuss the basics of what composting is and the various methods used to compost, including the use of earthworms.

The format of the two hands-on workshops is the following: 45 min presentation and 45 – 60 min outdoor demonstrating. Workshops will take place in Benicia Demonstration Food Forests to allow attendees to see how healthy soil looks like under mulch, let people touch and smell good soil, and practice simple tool and techniques. Both locations have chickens, “an ultimate waste transformation creatures” as an added bonus to expand people’s understanding of backyard sustainability.
