The City of Lafayette and the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with local non-profit organization Sustainable Lafayette, will host the city’s 12th annual Earth Day Festival at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center. The theme of this year’s festival is “Sustainable Youth” and the event will showcase local youth groups as well as exhibitors will provide attendees with inspiration and awareness about how to make their local community more sustainable and connect them with opportunities to help.

At the festival, there will be lots of opportunities for children and teens to learn how to be environmental stewards for their community and help contribute to its sustainability.  Lamorinda 4-H will have a petting zoo featuring their livestock projects; Global Student Embassy will demonstrate how to create a garden in a small space; the Lafayette Community Garden will bring vegetable starts and display chickens; Imperfect Produce representatives will talk about food waste and encourage purchasing of “cosmetically challenged” produce, and White Pony Express will present information about their food rescue program. Sustainable Lafayette will also host a “Repair Café” where volunteers will repair household items on-site to prevent them from going to a landfill.

In addition, there will be hands-on activities for youth including an “adventure playground” where children can use their imaginations to make their own creations using recycled materials.  Global Student Embassy will lead a community participation art project using plastic straws collected locally to educate community members about the waste created by single-use plastic straws.  There will also be an environmentally themed scavenger hunt and a “Safe Moves Bike Rodeo” along Golden Gate Way where participants can learn best practices in bike safety and Boy Scouts can work towards a biking merit badge by participating.

Attendees can choose from a variety of sustainable and healthy food options, and enjoy entertainment including live music and screenings of environmentally themed films produced by local youth.

The annual Lafayette Awards of Environmental Excellence, more commonly known as the Lafayette Green Awards, will be announced at the festival.  The awards recognize outstanding efforts that contribute to a more sustainable community and help the City achieve its environmental goals.

Attendees are encouraged to find alternative modes of transportation to the festival since there is limited parking around the event location.  Those driving to the event are encouraged to park at Stanley Middle School. For those who choose to bike to the festival, there will be a free bicycle valet with hosted by a local Cub Scout troop.

The Lafayette Earth Day Festival is organized and hosted by Sustainable Lafayette, the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Lafayette. Vendors include Republic Services, MCE, Rising Sun Energy, Imperfect Produce, White Pony Express and many more.
