The Ruth Bancroft Garden will kick off the Garden Workshop Series with a preview of a rating system that will ‘green’ the world of gardening. Now in its pilot stage, the Sustainable Sites Rating System sets benchmarks to help gardeners design, construct, and maintain a ‘green’ landscape. Construction of the garden is only a small part of ensuring a sustainable site. Gardeners can voluntarily follow this checklist to enhance the environmental performance of their landscape. Developed by leading botanical gardens with assistance from the US Green Building Council, Sustainable Sites is for landscapes what LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] is for buildings. The Ruth Bancroft Gardens is pleased to have Joseph Monte, LEED-AP, introduce this new rating system in the context of residential gardening. Joseph will discuss tools that help gardeners use water wisely, build soil health, select appropriate plants and materials, and design for human health. Participants will see the rating system in action as Joseph assesses renovations happening right now at the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Analysis of RBG’s garden bed restoration and office deck retrofit will illustrate the costs and benefits of designing landscapes the next generation of gardeners can enjoy. This workshop is sponsored by Contra Costa Water District.
