As the climate becomes less human friendly, it’s also becoming less agriculture friendly. Hotter temperatures, drought, giant storms and species die-off all place great strain on our farms and ultimately our ability to feed our nation and the world. What if we could grow food indoors, vertically and more  sustainably,  avoiding extreme weather, using less water and substituting soil for liquid nutrients? We can! It’s called vertical farming, and it’s gaining traction in urban centers like the Bay Area as an innovative tool to combat climate change.

The monthly Green Sofa Cinema Series explores the promise of vertical farming Wed., Oct. 27th from 7 p.m. to 8 pm. via Zoom with a discussion of the film “Vertical Farms” and an interactive chat with award-winning Chef/Teacher/Activist Cindy Gershen, a local vertical farming expert, creator of Mt. Diablo High School’s Sustainable Hospitality Program and founder of Walnut Creek’s Sunrise Bistro and Catering restaurant, which her son operates today.

Cindy has installed 40 vertical garden towers as educational tools at schools across the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, where she has taught since 2012. Her Mt. Diablo High School students have grown nutritious produce ranging from lettuce and spinach to cilantro, chard, kale, basil and arugula. In the process, they’ve also learned about nutrition, recipes, cooking, food politics, entrepreneurship and the environment.

So grab a seat soon on your own favorite sofa and watch “Vertical Farms” from the Cities of Tomorrow Series, (free on YouTube). Then Zoom in Oct. 27th to discuss the film and hear from Cindy (register in advance HERE).

The Green Sofa Cinema Series is sponsored by four Contra Costa environmental groups: 350 Contra Costa, Generation Green, Sustainable Contra Costa and Sustainable Rossmoor. The Oct. 27th Green Sofa Cinema event also is a featured activity of Sustainability Week in Walnut Creek, Oct. 24-30, a week of free events, screenings and workshops on sustainable living and taking action against climate change.
