Thousands of heirloom plants, representing more than 60 proven varieties from Ace to Wisconsin Gold, will be on sale to get the spring planting season off to a healthy start. This year, tomatoes will be joined by a selection of artichoke, eggplants, sweet and chili peppers, and tomatillos, all selected for their success in Contra Costa home gardens – from Richmond to Brentwood.
For purposes of propagation, Contra Costa Master Gardeners use only seeds from open-pollinated varieties that breed true. Many of these seeds we have collected ourselves from our own gardens. We do not use any GMO seeds.
Located at the “Our Garden,” Master Gardener demonstration site, the Great Tomato Plant Sale is an educational family event. Experts will be on hand to provide advice about plant selection, site location and preparation, planting, fertilizing, pruning, and harvesting. Avid gardeners can get specific questions answered and learn about strategies to minimize plant disease and maximize production.
Among the heirloom varieties on sale this year are:
- IIsis Candy Cherry: a gorgeous bicolor cherry that is wonderfully rich and fruity
- Stupice Organic: a cold-tolerant, disease and drought-resistant early producer
- Persimmon: persimmon colored beefsteak, very sweet
- Picardy: from the gardens of France, excellent for canning
- San Marzanos Gigante and Regular: famous Italian heirloom grown for delicious tomato sauce
- Momotaro: most popular tomato in Japan with sweet and tangy taste
- Lizzano: ideal for baskets, containers and small gardens
A second sale will be on April 12th from 10am to 2pm.
