More Green Electricity is coming to our neighborhood, or it could be. YOU can help make this happen.
The Sierra Club, the Contra Costa Chapter of Organizing for Action and other local organizations concerned about the environment and climate change are building public awareness and support for Community Choice Energy in our county. Community Choice Energy (CCE) or Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a system which allows cities and counties to aggregate the buying power of their residents and businesses and to provide 50% or 100% renewable energy to the cities that sign up. This is an alternative to the traditional utility business model based on monopolizing the energy supply. PG&E continues to manage the grid, distribution lines, repairs, and billing system. Typically the cost to the consumer is less than PGE's (which is only 28% renewable energy). A CCE can also create more local green jobs.
Three Contra Costa cities have already joined Marin's CCE (MCE): Richmond, El Cerrito, and San Pablo. In 2013, MCE saved San Rafael city government $30,000 and Richmond $54,000. The Contra Costa West County School system saved $66,000. In 2014, MCE saved its total users $5.9 million. Big users of electricity (industry) have the biggest savings, but individual households benefit too. CCE would create a continuous environmentally sustainable revenue stream for all the county.
