4rd Annual

Mayors’ Healthy Cook-Off

Hosted by the City of Concord and Mayor Ron Leone

Thursday August 23rd, 4 pm at Todos Santos Plaza

The City of Concord is hosting the 4th Annual Mayor’s Healthy Cookoff on Thursday August 23rd in Todos Santos Plaza. The “Iron Chef” style cook-off begins at 4pm where Chefs will be given a “grab-bag” of different produce selected by Chef Cindy Gershen of the Wellness City Challenge. Produce will come from the Pacific Coast Farmers Market, with thanks to Vince Scalice as well as from the Mt. Diablo High School Garden. Grocery Outlet of Concord is donating the whole grains and protein.

Last year’s event was held in Clayton with Concord taking home the trophy for the second time, having won the inaugural contest in 2009. It is tradition that the winning city hosts the following year or chooses the next city to host. A trophy is also awarded to the winning city and has spent the last year at Bravo Bistro with Chef Habib El Jacifi.

Each mayor has been asked to invite a chef from their city to participate on their team. A Sous Chef from Serendipity Culinary Academy at Mt. Diablo High School will also be a part of each team. Chefs are allowed to bring 2 burners, their own kitchen equipment, but no outside foods (spices and herbs are permitted). Each team will receive a “grab bag” with ingredients that meet new USDA school meal guidelines.  All ingredients must be used and the contest health rules followed to qualify.  Entries will be judged on creativity, presentation, and taste.  This year an additional panel of “student judges” as well as a representative from school food service will be there with the hopes of showing that students like real, fresh food.

Cindy Gershen states, "From my experience at Mt. Diablo High School and schools across Contra Costa County, if students are given the chance, they want to eat what the adults eat and want real food. We are going to give them this opportunity and we will see what happens!”

Additional details will be provided in the cook-off packet for each team. Event sponsors and supporters include: Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association, Grocery Outlet of Concord, the American Heart Association and the City of Concord. The Mayors Healthy Cookoff was created by Wellness City Challenge in 2009, inviting every mayor in Contra Costa County to participate and is now in its 4th year.
