Spring is in full swing and it's an excellent time to get outdoors for some exercise! May is National Bike Month, so join Sustainable Contra Costa and our partners for events to support safe biking in our community. On May 21st, dust off your bike to take part in Bike to Wherever Day! Pledge to participate, and then find an energizer station near you to earn prizes and a digital goody bag.
If you haven't been biking for a while, now is the perfect time to try it out again. Bike East Bay hosts free classes on subjects such as urban biking, theft prevention, and learning to ride for all ages! Bike East Bay works to make biking safe, fun, and accessible, and there are many ways to get involved or learn more about bicycle infrastructure in your area. You can even find a campaign near you to learn about the progress being made in your community. By working together, we can show our elected officials that we value safe streets for all, especially pedestrians and cyclists. For more information on the environmental and economic impacts of bike-friendly communities, see the "Bicycle Infrastructure" article on page 3 of the Sustainable Leaders in Action December newsletter.
For more resources about local bike trails and incentives to ride, check out 511 Contra Costa's website! You can plan your route with the Bike Mapper, access free bike locker parking, and even find e-bike rebates.
Wherever we live or work, we can all ensure a safe environment for bikers, pedestrians, and other vehicles on the road! Sustainable Contra Costa has partnered with the Contra Costa Spare the Air Resources Team to share the Driver's Ed 2.0 Quiz.
Drivers – new or experienced – can test their knowledge about driving safely around cyclists and pedestrians by taking this 6-question quiz from Bike East Bay. Answers are provided at the end of the quiz and are specific to California state law. Take the quiz, and you could earn a $50 Visa gift card!
You can learn more by requesting a Bike-Friendly Driver class for your East Bay company, school, or other community organization. Fill out the short class application form at BikeEastBay.org/ClassRequest, or find a free workshop to attend at BikeEastBay.org/education.
You can also earn prizes from Sustainable Contra Costa by logging your biking through the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge. Create a free account to measure your household carbon footprint and learn about over 80 sustainable actions, like Walk, Bike, Skateboard or Unicycle. Post about an action you've taken and you can earn one of our Challenge prizes.
