Founded in 1971, Save Mount Diablo, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, California non-profit corporation, acquires and preserves land on and around Mount Diablo.
This is a part time, temporary, up to 20 hours a week, non-exempt internship position that reports to the Land Conservation Manager. In general, the schedule for this position will be two or three days per week including Saturdays and will take place September through December.
Under the supervision of the Land Conservation Manager, and in coordination with the Stewardship and Outreach Coordinator, the Stewardship and Outreach Intern is responsible for:
Aiding the Land Department staff and the Stewardship Committee in stewardship of SMD properties including photo monitoring, building and grounds upkeep, trails repair, fuel management and other maintenance activities.
Creating content about each of our properties and various projects for our website.
Organizing photos of SMD properties and restoration projects, and developing/implementing protocol and guidelines for remote camera traps on properties.
Supporting events, including the Mount Diablo Trails Challenge and the Mary Bowerman Science and Research Colloquium.
Assisting with trainings for current and future volunteers.
Assisting in the creation of hike descriptions, updating hike schedules, inventorying and organizing guided hikes, and implementing land related events, etc.
Involvement in IPM program; including removal of non-native weeds.
Assisting with a variety of Land Department projects as needed, including administrative support.
Assisting with volunteer management and organization.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
Working towards a career in the environmental field
Competency in writing
Ability to effectively relate to volunteers and the general public
Restoration skills helpful or the desire to learn new restoration skills
Familiarity with photo capturing, labeling and storage.
Ability to be accurate and detailed in accomplishing a variety of daily tasks
Outgoing personality & sense of humor
Appreciation of environmental issues & outdoor recreational activities
Ability to work independently
Property and equipment maintenance experience helpful but not required.
Familiarity with East Bay open space
Computer proficient
Essential Requirements:
Possess valid California driver’s license and clean driving record
Daily access to a motor vehicle
In general, will include Saturdays and two weekdays (not Mondays).
Ability to hike long distances and work, often on rugged terrain and in varied weather.
Ability to frequently lift, carry/move small boxes, furniture, equipment and supplies at least 40 lbs.
Ability to withstand working in hot temperatures
This is a paid internship; compensation will reflect experience.
