Sustainable Contra Costa has an immediate opening for a Programs Coordinator

The Opportunity

Entering its 16th year, Sustainable Contra Costa (SCOCO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit at the forefront of creating ecologically sustainable, economically vibrant, and socially just communities. We work with agencies and organizations on education and action campaigns that empower thousands of people each year to save water and energy, reduce waste, and build healthy, resilient communities. Our work is based on the 10 principles of One Planet Living and we are committed to helping achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals through local actions in the greater Contra Costa region.  

Position Overview

This is an independent contractor position, which provides support to the SCOCO Team to plan, promote, and implement education and outreach programs, and represent Sustainable Contra Costa within the community with the highest possible level of inspiration and professionalism. This is a part-time (15-20 hours per week) position based in Contra Costa County. It allows for a flexible schedule, and occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.

Responsibilities

  • With support from the Program Managers, develop and implement work plans including defining goals, tasks, and timelines for education and community engagement activities
  • Coordinate activities including: workshops; community meetings; events; and action campaigns. This includes coordinating outreach; volunteers; presenters and instructors; agendas and talking points; promotional materials, logistics, and follow-up
  • Track and report on program metrics, outcomes, and contract-related activities
  • Work with Program Managers to design and implement marketing campaigns
  • Conduct analysis to determine the effectiveness of each campaign, and report key findings to stakeholders
  • Identify and maintain relationships with key community partners to increase impact
  • Represent SCOCO at community events and meetings
  • Support organization-wide programs and events and fundraisers, as needed (e.g., Contra Costa Sustainability & Green Building Awards Gala)

Required Skills and Attributes

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience. BA/BS is environmental or sustainability field is a plus but not required
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating outreach and education programs
  • Confident public speaker with ability to generate enthusiasm for SCOCO’s work
  • Excellent interpersonal, group facilitation, networking and collaboration skills
  • Ability to engage with government and business partners in a professional manner
  • Excellent project coordination skills and ability to delegate tasks effectively
  • Proven self-starter who takes initiative and solves problems
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to juggle a diverse array of tasks while maintaining high standards
  • Ability to work well with tight timelines, shifting priorities and diverse teams
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and databases
  • Integrity, credibility and a commitment to, and passion for, SCOCO’s mission

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Knowledge of water conservation, stormwater management and watershed conservation, and permaculture concepts
  • Well-developed network of contacts (community, business, municipal, school, etc.) within Contra Costa County
  • Spanish language skills are a plus but not required

The Contractor will negotiate an hourly rate with Sustainable Contra Costa, and invoice monthly for their services. Pay typically ranges from $20 - $25/hour, depending upon experience. Schedule allows for flexible hours and a combination of remote and in-person activities; approximately 15-20 hours per week to start. The possibility exists for this position to transition to employee status with increased hours.
