Sustainable Contra Costa (SCOCO) is a 501c3 nonprofit that educates, connects and inspires Contra Costa individuals and organizations to embrace a sustainable lifestyle.  We are a community of citizens, educators, innovators, and organizations working together to create ecologically sustainable, economically vibrant, and socially just communities for all.  Our work is based on the 10 principles of One Planet Living and we are committed to helping achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals through local actions.  

Position Overview

The Community Organizer will work with local leaders, residents, organizations, and government agencies primarily in East Contra Costa to engage, coach, and empower people to participate in efforts that spur climate action, improve air quality, and create more connected, resilient communities.  This is a part-time, hourly position based in Contra Costa County. The flexible schedule requires occasional weekend and evening hours.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Use best practices in community organizing to identify, engage, mentor and motivate individuals and groups interested in taking an active role in addressing air quality and related issues in their neighborhoods and communities 
  • Work with community leaders to identify goals, needs, and challenges related to air quality and community resiliency
  • Help communities develop successful strategies and plans, including goals, metrics, and timelines
  • Plan and conduct in-person and online meetings; set meeting goals and agendas; facilitate dialogue and keep meetings on track; follow through on next steps
  • Develop and deliver inspiring and engaging presentations both online and in-person
  • Track and report on engagement activities and progress
  • Represent Sustainable Contra Costa with the highest level of inspiration and professionalism

Required Skills and Attributes 

  • 2+ years’ experience working to organize and support community groups or doing community education and engagement
  • Organized, with excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to follow through on tasks
  • Confident and enthusiastic demeanor
  • A team player who enjoys working collaboratively and independently
  • Personable and a natural networker 
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
  • Strong ability to inspire and motivate self and others
  • Lives in and is familiar with communities in East Contra Costa County

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Fluent Spanish language skills strongly preferred
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability and climate action
  • Competent computer skills including use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and online meeting platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams and GoogleMeet
  • Experience with CRM software such as Salesforce and other relational databases a plus 

The Position 

  • Part-time, employee position with flexible hours; approximately 15-20 hours per week to start
  • Possibility for position to become full-time status

  • Pay starting range:  $25.00-$30.00 per hour, depending on experience, with a review at 90 days
