Position Overview
The Community Organizer will work with local leaders, residents, organizations, and government agencies primarily in East Contra Costa to engage, coach, and empower people to participate in efforts that improve air quality and health, spur climate action, and create more connected, resilient communities. This is a part-time, hourly position based in Contra Costa County. A portion of the work can be done remotely, but many activities will be conducted on-site in East Contra Costa communities; the flexible schedule requires occasional weekend and evening hours.
Primary Responsibilities
- Use best practices in community organizing to identify, engage, mentor and motivate individuals and groups interested in taking an active role in addressing air quality and related issues in their neighborhoods and communities
- Work with community leaders to identify goals, needs, and challenges related to air quality and community resiliency
- Help communities develop successful strategies and plans, including goals, metrics, and timelines
- Plan and conduct in-person and online meetings; set meeting goals and agendas; facilitate dialogue and keep meetings on track; follow through on next steps
- Develop and deliver inspiring and engaging presentations both online and in-person
- Track and report on engagement activities and progress
- Represent Sustainable Contra Costa with the highest level of inspiration and professionalism

Preferred Skills and Attributes
- Fluent Spanish language skills strongly preferred
- Experience organizing community groups or doing community education and engagement
- Knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability and climate action
- Competent computer skills including use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and online meeting platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams and GoogleMeet
- Experience with CRM software such as Salesforce and other relational databases a plus
The Position
- Contract position with flexible hours and a combination of remote and in-person activities; approximately 15-20 hours per week to start
- Possibility for position to transition to employee status with increased hours
