New SLIA Newsletter intern Carmen introduces the 2024 interns:
As the summer draws to a close a new crop of interns at Sustainable Contra Costa’s youth team, Sustainable Leaders in Action (SLIA), have begun acclimating to their new positions & responsibilities, and leading exciting projects. Following in the footsteps of Sustainable Contra Costa, these high school students have dedicated themselves to environmental activism and sustainability. Read on to learn how!
Throughout the last school year, members of the Policy committee, led by new intern Grace, have been visiting high schools within Contra Costa County and educating students about environmental justice, sustainability, and how to have a voice in community policy and legislation. This project has continued into the new school year with SLIA members planning to visit middle schools in the fall. Educating the public is at the forefront of SLIA’s goals and the Policy committee has maintained their passion!
SLIA intern Emily has also been busy preparing for the Climate Careers Chats. This program organizes online panel discussions between the public and professionals in sustainability fields. As panelists, moderators, and other roles are filled, the Climate Careers Chat committee will be devoting themselves to educating others!
Newly appointed Graphics and Communications interns, Calder and Miki, have led the creation of graphic-design projects for SLIA. Their work makes content not only more digestible, but more accessible to the public, giving SLIA the opportunity to spread even more awareness about topics, especially on social media. They have especially been focused on promoting SLIA’s Art Contest, a project that will help compile art from around the county that relates to sustainability.
Fundraising intern Saoirse is responsible for the funds SLIA collects. They lead the organization of fundraisers for SLIA and help make what we do possible. As the SLIA Art Contest continues and the auction approaches, Saorise has especially been focused on its promotion!
The Newsletter intern Carmen (that’s me!) leads the production of SLIA’s bi-monthly newsletter, which is written, assembled, promoted, and published by high school students. With the new school year underway, my committee and I have our August newsletter well underway. Click to subscribe so you won’t miss an issue.
SLIA’s interns and members have been working hard to stay true to both Sustainable Contra Costa and Sustainable Leaders in Action’s goals, with an emphasis on spreading awareness about sustainability.
