While many local schools have clubs or programs that celebrate the earth year-round, we wanted to highlight some of the thoughtful and exciting events planned around this year’s Earth Day (April 22nd). From Fair Oaks Elementary School’s Family Garden, Health and Nutrition Night to Diablo Valley College’s campus Earth Day event, schools of all grade levels are taking the time to increase environmental awareness.
Fair Oaks Elementary School and the C.A.R.E.S. After School Program is sponsoring a Family Garden, Health and Nutrition Night at the school on Tuesday, April 21st. The event includes Zumba on the playground, garden tours and seed planting, hands-on cooking lessons, healthy snacks, and garden/nutrition themed raffles. The event is in collaboration with MDUSD's Farm to School Program.
Sequoia Middle School’s Earth Club is continuing the tradition of making posters to display at the Pleasant Hill Library. They will also lead Earth Day activities at lunchtime on Wednesday, April 22nd.
College Park High School’s Earth Club is coordinating their first Earth Fest on Friday, April 24th. Leading up to Earth Fest, the school will celebrate with spirit week, which will encourage students to adopt environmentally conscious habits that will help reduce pollution, waste, and promote water conservation. Then at Earth Fest, various community businesses and organizations (including SCOCO!) will be available to talk to students about how to have a positive environmental impact.
Miramonte High School’s Climate Change Awareness Week is already in progress, having started on April 6th. The Week’s events will include a recycling relay, themed dress-up days, environment-related lessons from teachers, and improv pieces from the drama department. Every day, relevant quotes will be distributed over the PA system, online, and in the Miramonte news bulletin. The environmental club will be conducting a campus waste audit. To encourage students to bring reusable bottles and containers, cookie coupons will be given to the first 50 students seen at lunch with reusables. The final event on Friday will include a raffle and a guest presentation for the entire school.

Diablo Valley College’s Sustainability Committees and Earth Club are organizing the campus’ Earth Day event, which will take place on April 22nd. The event will host exhibitors from the community, such as 511 Contra Costa, SCOCO, and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum. There will be fun activities, including a drum circle, a chalk art attack by DVC’s Art department, and Sustainability Jeopardy.
If you know of another school’s Earth Day event in Contra Costa County, please tell us about it in the comments below!
