Martinez is the latest City in Contra Costa County to adopt an Organics Recycling Program to divert organic materials from the landfill! The program, which began on January 1st, 2016, allows residents to toss food scraps, food-soiled paper, yard debris, and other compostable materials into their existing green carts for weekly collection.
The State has set a goal (AB 341) to “source reduce” and recycle 75% of solid waste generated in California, by 2020. Considering organic materials make up over 30% of waste in the landfill, cities throughout California will need to begin implementation of organics recycling program to meet the 75% diversion goal (and greenhouse gas reduction goals of AB 32).
If your City does not have an organics recycling program, let them know you’re interested by reaching out to your Garbage and Recycling provider or City Council.
