The election last month left many of us with heavy hearts and discouraged spirits, especially with regard to environmental protection and sustainability. However, now more than ever we are committed to making sure we do everything we can on a local level to fight for a cleaner, healthier environment.
This past election, California stepped up and together, we did it! Yes on 67 passed, and single-use plastic bags are banned -- for good -- in California.
The race was very close but the environment won! Prop 67 passed 52.3% to 47.7%, 65 failed 55.2% to 44.8%. Visit the Secretary of State for additional details.
Big Plastic spent more than $6 million on a deceptive and cynical 'two ballot' measure campaign aimed at confusing voters. Despite being outspent more than four to one, California environmental groups and community efforts prevailed by running an honest, fact-based, grassroots campaign.
We are going to start seeing the results immediately, with the elimination of the 25 million plastic shopping bags that have been generated every day: significantly less plastic pollution and waste, less litter on roads, parks, creeks, and beaches, and a reduced threat to wildlife.
California is the first state to enact a statewide plastic bag ban, but we won't be the last. Already local activists and elected officials across the country have been inspired by our collective accomplishment and are preparing to introduce their own policies based on California's example.
