Spring has sprung and communities throughout Contra Costa County are celebrating Earth Day this month, honoring our planet through a variety of fun and educational events for the whole family. Check out the events below and spend a few hours or the whole day enjoying the outdoors, doing community service or learning more about how to live sustainably.

Meet up with friends or family at the Lafayette Reservoir Visitors Center for the 6th Annual Earth Day Cleanup. Gloves, garbage buckets, litter sticks and vest will be provided. Volunteers can also enjoy complimentary lunch, compliments of Byron Park.

John Muir Birthday/Earth Day Celebration

Pack a picnic and plan to spend the day at the John Muir National Historic Site where visitors can enjoy live music, informational exhibits, a one-of-a-kind fashion show (hint: costumes are made from recycled goods), a silent auction and guided tours of one of America’s most famous naturalists.

Ever wonder how a recycling facility actually works? Join Mt. Diablo Recycling for their 4th annual family Earth Day Celebration and take a tour of their 90,000 square-foot recycling facility. The City of Lafayette, in partnership with local non-profit Sustainable Lafayette and the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, will host the city’s 11th annual Earth Day Festival at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center. The theme of this year’s festival is “Act Locally” and the event will feature activities and exhibitors providing attendees with inspiration and awareness about how to make their local communities more sustainable.
