It’s harvest season and farmers markets are open for business. Markets across Contra Costa are offering a variety of fresh, organic produce that just might make your Thanksgiving grocery list--and maybe even the menu. More often than not, your local farmer’s market will have recipes to accompany the fall season, like Oat Stuffed Crisp Pears (pictured), Kabocha Squash Pie, Blue Cheese Figs, and much more.
Here are a few local farmers markets and their produce in season. The Farmer’s Market Finder will help you locate all the nearby markets.

Buying from farmers’ markets is a great way to be eco-friendly while satisfying your hunger. You can try a variety of foods, enjoy fresher produce, and support family farmers. Shopping at farmers’ markets is also environmentally friendly! Most commercially-grown produce travels over 1,500 miles to get to your plate, which means lots of carbon emissions from transportation. In addition, a lot of supermarket produce is grown with harmful pesticides. By buying locally, you ensure your food travels shorter distances and is grown with less pesticides.
Buy Local, Buy Organic is also an action on the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge. Check out the platform to explore more actions to complete this fall.
