Having just celebrated its 25th anniversary, Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is a small but well respected nonprofit in the sustainability field. The mission of SSMC is to stimulate community action on economic, environmental and social issues through advocacy, programs and public recognition, advancing the goals of a sustainable region. SSMC is looking for its next Executive Director and is currently undergoing a transitional process with an Interim Executive Director after the departure of an E.D. last fall who was with the organization for 6 years. During this interim time, the organization has been evaluating its operations and planning its future direction. This is a great opportunity for the right person who can develop a vision from the framework provided by the Board and the organization’s rich history of programming in the region, and build the organization accordingly, with a wealth of community support and dedicated committee and Board members, along with a part-time administrator and at least 2 outside contractors.

The position will be part time to begin, with limited responsibilities, and will expand to full time as
program elements and funding requests are realized. Therefore, this candidate needs to be a self-starter and flexible, with an established record of running a small organization and/or programming efforts, preferably in the immediate community, and with a level of familiarity with the various organizations, agencies and people involved in the sustainability field.

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all administrative and programmatic efforts of the organization, as well as for supervisory oversight of at least one part-time administrator as well as the work of two outside contractors. Other key functions include strategic planning and development, Board development, marketing, financial performance and community outreach/engagement. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Board Governance
Responsible for leading SSMC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission and vision as defined by the Board of Directors. Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and a variety of committees to provide information necessary to make informed decisions through a schedule of meetings.

Financial Performance

Responsible for fiscal oversight of SSMC, including the development and submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements. Develops resources to secure the financial requirements of the organization. Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintains the organization’s positive financial position. Responsible for fund-raising and developing other resources necessary to support SSMC’s mission.

Organization Mission and Strategy
Responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of SSMC’s programs and events.
Responsible for strategic planning efforts and measurable outcomes that consistently evaluate and
ensure that SSMC as an organization is responsible and relevant. Responsible for increasing the visibility of SSMC as an organization through various channels, and for representing the organization at a variety of meetings and events, as well as establishing and maintaining partnerships in the field.

Responsible for effective administration of SSMC’s operations. Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure effective ongoing operations of the organization. Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff and volunteers. Responsible for signing all notes, agreements and other binding documents made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

1. Bachelor’s degree, advanced education in a sustainability-related field desired
2. Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience, with executive/management experience
preferred, demonstrating a value for transparency and high integrity in the workplace
3. Strong organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task
4. Ability to lead and convey a vision of SSMC’s strategic future to staff, Board, volunteers and
5. Solid, hands-on budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-
making and reporting
6. Knowledge of fund-raising and development strategies, as well as membership programs and
donor cultivation strategies, unique to the nonprofit sector
7. Excellent communication and public speaking skills
8. Collaborative skills that motivate Board members, staff and other volunteers
9. Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff and volunteers
Part-time salary (based on at least 20 hours per week) is anticipated between $30-35K, commensurate with experience and other qualifications, increasing as programs and funding expand.
