8095735856?profile=originalIf you’re considering taking action to reduce your energy use, a great starting point is with a home energy audit.  Though a professional will be able to provide a more thorough energy audit, there are resources available to homeowners to complete an audit on their own.  The US Department of Energy has created a useful checklist that can be used for a DIY energy audit.  It walks you through checking for air leaks, insulation, heating and cooling equipment, lighting, and appliances.

Another option is to set up a Green House Call with Rising Sun Energy Center this summer.  The home energy assessments are free and are part of Rising Sun Energy Center’s California Youth Energy Services Program.  During a Green House Call, an Energy Specialist will complete a walk through of your home and will identify water and energy saving opportunities.  The Energy Specialists also provide free items such as compact fluorescent bulbs, faucet aerators and showerheads, free power strips to replace inefficient household items!

Areas in Contra Costa County that will have access to the free assessments this summer include: Antioch, Martinez, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda

If you’re ready to start on a full home energy upgrade project, check out Energy Upgrade California.  The site has great resources for finding qualified contractors, rebates, financing options, and everyday tips for energy and water efficiency.

Easy Energy Saving Tip: Use a power strip to plug in your electronics (TVs, stereos, etc.) and turn the switch off when the electronics are not in use.
