Sustainable Contra Costa (SCOCO) is a 501c3 nonprofit that educates, connects and inspires Contra Costa individuals and organizations to embrace a sustainable lifestyle. The Community Outreach Coordinator will collaborate with local leaders, residents, organizations, and government agencies throughout Contra Costa to inspire and empower individuals to take meaningful action in reducing their carbon footprint, promoting climate initiatives, and building connected, resilient communities. This role is essential to the success of the Sustainable Contra Costa (SCOCO) team, primarily by driving participation in the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge, our flagship community engagement platform.
Key responsibilities include designing and executing outreach programs, fostering new partnerships, and enhancing community involvement. The ideal candidate is an effective public speaker, experienced in sales, marketing and/or community organizing, and deeply passionate about sustainability. While much of the work can be performed remotely, the role also involves in-person community events. The position offers a flexible schedule, but does require some evening and weekend commitments.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Create outreach programs to engage and inspire community members to take sustainable action
- Develop and implement work plans including defining goals, tasks, timelines and activities
- Manage and report on program metrics and goals such as water and energy usage, CO2 emissions, and waste reduction
- Maintain relationships with current partners
- Lead quarterly meetings with partners to report on progress in our core outreach program, share sustainability metrics, and collaborate on upcoming messaging and events
- Develop and deliver inspiring and engaging presentations both online and in-person to high schools, community groups, and at city council meetings
- Represent SCOCO at various events throughout the year, and especially during the month of April (Earth Day events)
- Train and oversee volunteers at tabling events
- Utilize Salesforce to create marketing messages, list emails and to update contacts
- Collaborate with the SCOCO team on organizing events, the annual gala, and workshops
- Organize 3-5 workshops (in person &/or virtual) throughout the year, coordinating with sponsors and co-promoters
- Track and report on engagement activities and progress
- Spearhead the marketing strategy and messaging for campaigns and events
- Work with SCOCO’s Communications team to enhance social media presence
- Represent Sustainable Contra Costa with the highest level of inspiration and professionalism

- Competent computer skills including use of GoogleWorkspace, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and online meeting platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams and GoogleMeet
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
- Lives in and is familiar with Contra Costa County
- Familiar with Salesforce or similar CRM
- Ability to speak multiple languages
- Sales and Marketing experience
- Experience organizing community groups or doing community education and engagement
- Knowledgeable and passionate about sustainability and climate action
