Whether you are celebrating a winter holiday this year, or just looking for an activity with your household, why not try out a new recipe?
Here are some recipes from end-of-year holidays celebrated around the world.
1. Hanukkah will be celebrated this year from December 10 to December 18th. An important food in Jewish cuisine, challah is a light, braided bread served on Shabbat and major holidays. If your bread has the right amount of gluten development and rising time, you may even be able to pull apart the braided strings as you eat it. Here is a comparison of four different challah variations.
2. Kwanzaa occurs each year from December 26 to January 1. An excellent meal to keep you warm and sate your hunger, try out Red Red, or African Stewed Black-Eyed Peas. This tomato-based soup, enjoyed widely throughout Ghana, has a smooth and meaty texture from the peas. Smoked meat or crayfish can be added to the soup for a richer, developed flavor, but it can also easily be adapted for vegetarian or vegan preferences. It would be excellent paired with fried plantains.
3. Christmas is celebrated each year on December 25th. Try out a French classic with a Bûche de Noël, or Yule Log Cake. This recipe yields a light, fluffy cake rolled into a swirl and topped with rich chocolate icing. It is traditionally decorated to appear like a fallen log. You can even decorate the cake with meringue mushrooms to add to the scene!
Two other excellent recipes for the winter months are Sopa Azteca (chicken tortilla soup) and Slow Cooker Minestrone.
From all of us at Sustainable Contra Costa, we hope you have a safe and nourishing December.
