California State Legislation 2010

Although most people think of legislators in Sacramento as a bunch of (insert expletive here), I wanted to share with you some of the successes of this legislative session. Even though the season has not quite ended, the environment has racked up quite a few wins. There are two bills that I am particularly watching. The first is SB 1100 by Corbett. This bill would make the manufacturers of all disposable batteries responsible for their proper end-of-life disposal. This would essentially mean convenient drop off opportunities for consumers. The feeling is that it is the maunufacturer that best knows how to deal with a product that they made when it is no longer useful. Of course, we realize that the cost for collecton and recycling of batteries will ultimately be passed on to the consumer. But if we can't put batteries in the landfill who should pay?

Another exciting bill that is still in play is the Plastic Bag Ban Bill AB 1998 by Brownley. It's about time that some legislator stepped up to the plate to try to alleviate the issue with disposable single-use plastic bags. I am so tired of seeing them in the trees, creeks, roadways, etc. Not to mention that they end up in the marine environment and can harm wildlife.

Both of these bill will be acted on in August. For more information contact me at loleigh@astound.net. And please, consider writing a letter in support of these bills to your legislators. Every voice counts!
