With Californians learning to live more safely with COVID, large events resuming and employers signaling a return to office, the Bay Area's transit agencies are working together to provide information regarding transit services schedule updates and tips for passengers. All 27 Bay Area agencies are collaborating to deliver services that will restart our region and get people where they need to go, safely.
Whether you are commuting multiple days a week, returning to school, visiting your favorite place, or taking occasional trips, you can rest assured knowing that our local transit agencies have implemented enhanced cleaning and ventilation protocols, required the ongoing use of face coverings and hand sanitizer, and expanded contactless payments features to keep workers and riders safe.
For example, all Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) cars have upgraded air filters that are dense enough to remove viruses. Ventilation is superior, with air being replaced every 70 seconds inside trains. Additionally, with more people working remotely from home, there is less crowding and ample parking at stations.

- Clipper START is a pilot program that offers single-ride discounts of up to 50% on most Bay Area transit systems, including Muni, Caltrain, BART, County Connection and more.
- Buy One, Get One Free Transit Passes Stretch your commuting dollar! 511 Contra Costa has partnered with WestCat, SolTrans, Tri Delta Transit and Solano Express to offer deals.
- "Drive Less Commuter Incentive" Make the change from a drive-alone commute to carpooling, vanpooling, taking transit, bicycling, walking, or working from home and you could be eligible for a $25 Drive Less Commuter Incentive. Driving less reduces traffic congestion and air pollution.
- Get Rewarded for your daily commute Earn miles automatically and redeem exclusive rewards with the Miles app. You’ll start earning points called ‘"miles" anytime you walk, ride transit, bike, or drive in Contra Costa. The greener your mode of travel, the more points you’ll earn! Your miles can be converted into rewards which you choose, selecting from a wide range of products and services from companies like Thrive Market, Zipcar, Postmates, Toms and more.
Safe Travel Practices:
- Stay home if you are sick.
- Plan your route - whenever possible, walk, bicycle or take a scooter to your destination to allow the possibility of greater physical distancing for those who have no other options for their essential trips, and consider using a touchless fare payment such as a Clipper card or mobile app.
- Face coverings are required by both federal and local health orders.
- Practice hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette - wash your hands before and after you ride public transit, or use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow.
- Practice physical distancing:
- Maintain ideally 6 ft of distance from people who are not from your household.
- Move away from the doors of the vehicle to make it easier for others to board and depart.
- Skip a row of seats between yourself and other riders if possible.
- Avoid sitting or standing face-to-face wth other passengers outside of your household.
Check out Riding Together: Bay Area Healthy Transit Plan, developed through the collaboration of the Bay Area’s 27 transit operators. This plan provides a unified and comprehensive framework of health and safety commitments, mitigation standards, communication efforts, and responsibilities for transit providers, employees, and passengers across all systems. The Healthy Transit Plan uses guidance from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the World Health Organization (WHO). This plan was also developed in partnership with regional leaders, transit employees, paratransit providers, rider advocates, and public health experts to ensure a safe transportation network in the Bay Area.
