Action of the Month: Get Your Fruit Trees in Shape
Now is the time to take care of your existing fruit trees and plant new ones, for a bountiful summer harvest.
When you grow your own fruit, you know exactly what chemicals are (or are not!) being applied, you are adding diversity and habitat to your garden, and can enjoy fresh fruit that has not traveled hundreds of miles.
There are a number of resources that can help with your fruit tree endeavors:
:
- Read this helpful guide from the UC Master Gardener Program, which explains which varieties of fruits and nuts grow best in each Contra Costa city, based on climate and other factors.
- Check out our fun "Planting & Managing Fruit Trees" Workshop next Tues, Feb 9! 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Rodgers Ranch, Pleasant Hill.
- This pruning video from the Permaculture Research Institute - winter pruning stimulates new growth for the spring.
