Whether it’s starting backyard (or indoor) composting or participating in curbside organics collection, there’s no time like the present to begin composting! Compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment made up of broken-down organic materials such as vegetable scraps, landscape trimmings, and coffee grounds. It can be added to landscaping or the vegetable garden to lock in moisture and help plants grow. Aside from producing a material that is great for the garden, composting also helps keep organic materials out of the landfill, which reduces methane emissions.
Many cities in Contra Costa County have already begun offering residential organics collection programs. Pleasant Hill is the latest Contra Costa city to offer curbside organics collection! Starting October 3rd, Pleasant Hill residents will be able to recycle food scraps alongside landscape trimmings in their green carts.
