Choosing to eat more natural foods is not only better for your body but for the environment as well!

The definition of "Natural Food" can be debated, but it typically means it does not contain artificial ingredients or preservatives, and has been minimally processed. Compared to processed foods, natural foods typically have more nutrients and less packaging.

The easiest way to go more natural with your diet is to focus on eating more fruits and vegetables - a fun and local way to get your produce is to shop at your farmers' markets! In Contra Costa County, we are lucky enough to have 23 certified Farmers' Markets throughout the week.

In addition to a wide selection of seasonal, local and fresh-picked produce, many other opportunities await you at the Market:

  • Talk with Farmers’ and learn how they grow your food - organic? heirloom varieties? etc.
  • Enjoy live music while shopping outside.
  • Buy locally grown produce from California Farmers.
  • Stock up on local honey, olive oil, vinegars, preserves & more!
  • Buy local organic pork, lamb and fresh, wild seafood.
  • Select lovely fresh flower bouquets.
  • Pick up new recipes and nutrition information
  • Reduce waste by bringing your own reusable bags, and buying exactly the amount that you need (no more tangerines in non-recyclable plastic net bags!)

The County Agriculture Departments inspect and certify markets, growers and production areas for compliance with the Food and Agriculture Code. Here is a full list of markets in Contra Costa - happy shopping and eating!
