The SCOCO team is in the midst of planning a whole new year’s worth of sustainable workshops. These are not 100% confirmed so you’ll need to check the website again soon (look under Events), but we couldn’t resist giving you a preview of what’s to come! This is a wonderful time to make some resolutions for an informative, entertaining, and green year ahead. All workshops below are at Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center in Pleasant Hill, but stay tuned for additional workshops in Pittsburg.
Kicking off the year on January 16 is the tried and true "Fruit Trees 101" workshop, a classic taught by Helen Erickson. Learn how to pick, plant, and prune fruit trees! This is intentionally taught in winter, the best time to buy bare root plants from your local nursery.
New and Improved
A new series called "Gardening in a Changing Climate" updates our previous and very popular permaculture series. Master Gardener Marian Woodard and her husband, Farmer John Matthesen (who runs the Rodgers Ranch Urban Farm and the ever-popular Spring Expo and Plant Sale in April), will co-teach this Saturday series on garden design, composting, seed starting, water catchment and gardening challenges, among countless other topics. Five Saturday dates are scheduled to run February 22 – March 21, 9:30am – 12pm, but please confirm online.
New Kid on the Block
Those of you who attended the "Party for the Planet" cocktail party on sustainable entertaining tips this past October will be happy to know we are expanding the concept to a quarterly series. Every season (winter, spring, summer, fall), we will offer a "Farm to Table: Come Eat With Us" workshop that emphasizes using the bounty from your garden to cook simple and delicious recipes.
Oldies But Goodies
We are taking our annual beekeeping workshop up a notch with "Beekeeping 201: The Next Level" in February. Anna Marie Beauchemin, founder of East Bay Herbals, will teach her popular workshop "Growing and Using Herbs" in April. Rodgers Ranch president, Denise Koroslev, will be our instructor for "Make Your Own Lotions, Salves, and Tinctures From Home" in June. After gauging the popularity of the hands-on "Family Worm Composting" workshop this past July, we will reprise that workshop as well. Stay tuned for other potential workshops on growing mushrooms, fermentation, and home canning in 2020 by checking Events on this website regularly.
In the meantime, we wish you and your loved ones a very happy and green holiday season!
