You may have had grand plans for those fruits and veggies you carefully selected at the store - but now they're looking a little less perky.
Wasting food also wastes the water and energy involved in growing, transporting and packaging them for us to eat or not).
Here are some things you can do to reduce food waste and help feed others:

  • Quick, rescue those wrinkly tomatoes and wilty greens by transforming them into something tasty with these easy ideas!
  • Got backyard fruit trees producing way more than you can eat? The Urban Farmers can help harvest your trees for you - you keep what you want and they'll bring the rest to a local food bank!
  • Donate food that is still good, to your local food bank or community kitchen. You could try the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano, Loaves & FishesBay Area Rescue MissionSt. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa, and many others. They also appreciate monetary donations as well if you'd like to help even more.
  • Freeze it or preserve it, or share it with your neighbors!
  • Are you sure that food item is actually going bad? Expiration dates are confusing, and the FDA doesn't regulate any of these except for baby formula. Here's a quick guide to tell if 12 common foods are still okay to eat (for example - if an egg sinks in a cup of water, it's okay - if it floats, don't eat!).8095743893?profile=original
  • Finally, if it's definitely no longer edible - compost it! Many cities accept food in the yard waste cart for composting, or you can start your own backyard compost system!
