With a new year comes the opportunity to hit the refresh button and reevaluate everything from your haircut to where you keep your money. So now is the perfect time to switch your money over to a credit union. Credit unions are non-profits owned by members, and tend to be smaller and more local than for-profit banks. And you will know that your money is not helping a large multi-national corporation invest in questionable things like oil pipelines and palm oil plantations.

Many offer the same services that banks do, without high fees and tricky fine print. Some reimburse ATM fees, and even notify you quickly once you’ve overdrawn your account. If you’re interested in a smarter, more community-oriented way to bank, consider leaving the banks behind and looking towards a credit union instead. You can find a list of some California credit unions here.
